DISC MOWERS "WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY"

Pöttinger means quality and reliability worldwide. The "What the Experts Say" section takes you on a tour to farming operations all over the world. Farmers report on their experience with Pöttinger agricultural technology.
Agroslatina in Zvolenská Slatina, Zvolen (SK)

The Agroslatina association based in Zvolenská Slatina farms an area of 1,506 hectares, of which 790 hectares is arable land. They grow grain crops, rapeseed and forage crops. Permanent grassland amounts to 440 ha for producing round 400 t of silage and 350 t hay per year. 430 t of clover silage is produced from the arable land.

The following Pöttinger machines are in use by the association: a NOVADISC 265 and a NOVADISC 305 mower for the last three years, as well as two JUMBO 6600 L loader wagons, the first since 2004 and the second since 2007. A TWIST 18001 F4 muck spreader has been in operation since last year.

„The disc mowers have mowed the whole silage crop area: grassland and clover fields. In a single shift they manage 10 to 15 ha, depending on the type of field and the conditions. Thanks to the JUMBO, this year we managed to produce 822 t of silage in five days. The capacity per day was as much as 160 t. These wagons loaded the entire grassland and clover harvest for the silage clamps. The distance to the arable land, on which we plant clover, was 3 km on average, whereas the grassland is up to 6 km away“, reports Ondrej Dubek, , Manager of Crop Production. "There aren't many workers available in our area, which is why Pöttinger technology makes such a difference. Thanks to their huge capacity the loader wagons save time, fuel and other costs besides. We haven't calculated the saving in fuel yet, but the farm manager can confirm that the Pöttinger system is considerably cheaper than a self-propelled harvester with 3 trucks. On its own, the self-propelled harvester consumed around 400 l of diesel per shift, whereas two tractors with the JUMBOs only used 500 l in three days." The farm manager is also very satisfied with the muck spreader. They use it for the arable land where they fertilise 25% of the area every year - 35 t of manure per ha is stored in a pit from where it is driven out into the fields. The muck spreader can handle 22 to 23 loads per day. It can transport 12.5 t and is hauled by a 190 hp tractor. „The muck spreader does an excellent job; its uniform spreading performance is first class. Following this excellent experience we would like to purchase another machine so that we can offer contract work in future as well. We also want to use the TWIST for transporting maize, although at the moment we don't have a powerful enough tractor“, reports Ondrej Dubek.

Agrospol Knínice near Boskovice, Blansko region (CZ)

Ing. Ladislav Menšík, Direktor

The Agricultural Association Agrospol farms 2,863 ha on the fringe of the fertile Haná region - approx. 2,500 ha of the land is arable. As far as livestock is concerned they have 365 dairy cattle and 250 calves. In addition, with 360 reared pigs approx. 600 to of pork is produced. The forage situation has been improved following the purchase of two EUROPROFI 3 L loader wagons, which have really proved their worth in silage harvesting. A Zetor 16045 tractor has proven highly suitable in providing pulling power. From the Pöttinger range, Agrospol Knínice also owns a EUROHIT 61 NZ tedder, a EUROTOP 800 windrower and CATNOVA 310 T CRW disc mower. A NOVACAT 305 H CRW and NOVACAT 306 F CRW disc mower combination plus EUROTOP 1251 rotary windrower with a working width of up to 12.5 m were purchased in 2005.

"Even initial experience with the loader wagon back in 2001 demonstrated that we can save a great deal on labour. The performance is comparable with a harvester. Every day each silage wagon harvests approx. 30 ha, depending on the distance travelled, which is 6 to 7 km on average here. The wagons deliver excellent work. Compared to harvesters they have no problem on slopes or stony ground and they are much more cost effective. The advantages of the loader wagon include loading and chopping straw for the barn or delivered directly to the stalls. We have been operating the tedder and windrower for five seasons now, with minimal repairs – we have only had to change 15 tines so far. If you look after the equipment and set it up properly, the windrower operates reliably and trouble-free. So far we haven't had to repair anything – excellent performance as far as we are concerned. After buying two silage wagons, windrowing became a limiting factor. That's why we will need another machine to coordinate our machinery better and deliver forage to the clamp even faster. If we want to produce really top quality silage then we need to deliver the crop in as short a time span as possible. We transport the crop from fields that are various distances away. Previously, we were unable to harvest at all with older machinery if it was raining, or the forage produced was unusable. With the new high-performance technology we have virtually no losses and the quality is incomparable", explains the delighted Director, Ladislav Menšík.

Walter Wladimir Egorowitsch, Omsk region

With a farm covering 5,836 hectares in the Omsk region, I operate an arable and livestock business with a total of 1,968 animals. For my forage harvesting I rely on Pöttinger machines. Cat Nova 310 T and Cat Nova 3100 TED mowers, the Eurohit 80 AZ tedder and the Eurotop 651 A Multitast windrower. This combination gives me an optimum harvest chain. I am particularly impressed with the cutting height adjustment system on the mowers and the way you can check the drive belt tension so easily. The intensity of the conditioning process is fantastic. I appreciate these machines because they are of high quality, offering reliability and performance. I am also very satisfied with the customer service provided by Pöttinger.

Bruce Richardson (Albany, Australia)

Bruce Richardson owns a Poettinger 265 H centre pivot mower purchased from C&C Machinery Centre, Albany, Western Australia. His farm is located at “Kentdale” which is between Denmark & Walpole within a 40 inch rainfall area in the southern part of Western Australia.

Bruce operates a beef cattle enterprise and a silage contracting business together with his wife Marion and his sons Andrew and David. They have 750 beef breeders and 100 steers on 2500 acres of pasture property.

Between clients’ and their own use, they bale and wrap 5000 rolls of silage annually. They use a Poettinger 265 H centre pivot mower on a 95 HP tractor for their work, traveling at approximately 14 kph. This mower cuts 600 acres over a wide range of conditions during the whole harvest season.

Bruce describes his Poettinger 265 H centre pivot mower as “being a long way ahead of any mower we have previously used”. Furthermore he mentions that “the centre pivot flotation is a great feature when compared to traditional cutter bars”.

Josef Borák, Vsetín (CZ)

Josef Borák operates an arable farm, which is not one of the larger businesses, but for many years he has been a loyal and important owner of Pöttinger agricultural technology. He farms 18 hectares in Velké Karlovice; the area around Vsetín. He concentrates on grassland and his farm is around 600 metres above sea level.

Josef Borák purchased his first Pöttinger machines back in 1999: a EUROTOP 340 N windrower, a EUROHIT 47 N tedder, a ROLLPROFI 3120 baler and a ROLLPROFI G 400 S bale wrapper. A NOVACAT 265 H ED disc mower and TWIST 4001 F4 spreader wagon were added in 2006. The most recently purchased machine was a NOVACAT 306 F ED α-motion. "I am very pleased with this technology. Thanks to the mower with conditioner the grass is longer than I was used too; it grows better and is easier to rake. I only need to use the tedder for harvesting hay. The muck spreader is also excellent. I use it especially for sheep dung to feed the grass with nutrients. The muck spreader can distribute the dung in a uniform layer, which is often difficult with sheep dung because it tends to form larger and harder lumps than cow dung," says Josef Borák, satisfied with the results his machines produce.

Director Tomash Iwan Mihailowitsch, Iwanowo/Russia

I operate a 3,500 hectare farm with 1,000 livestock. I use the following Pöttinger machines for grassland harvesting: the Novacat Alpha-motion mower, the Eurohit 80 AZ tedder and the Torro 5700 loader wagon. In my opinion the machines offer high performance and the best operating quality. They are also easy to operate and my employees quickly learn how to work with these machines. I am also very pleased with Pöttinger Customer Service. They are qualified service people who provide very good training and can help with assembly and repairs too, if necessary. I wish Pöttinger much success and look forward to finding out more about their product range.

Sergey Wladimirowitsch Zubari (Rostow, RU)

In autumn 2006 Pöttinger organised a number of demonstrations in the region of Rostov, where I saw the Cat Nova 310 T ED mower unit and the rotary windrower Eurotop 651 A in action. I was so impressed, I made the purchases immediately after the demonstrations! This season I have already used the machinery for two cuts and am completely satisfied with the work and the results. The quality of the cut has even made an additional cut possible. This would have been impossible before. I'm also delighted with the Eurotop 651 A. I fit both machines to MTZ 80 and 82 tractors. The machines work to perfection – so much so that I am now considering buying a Pöttinger loader wagon as well to optimise the harvest chain.

Barry Taunt (Stratford, Taranaki, New Zealand)

Barry Taunt with his father and brother in front of the new mower

MOWING grass under the shadow of Mount Taranaki can throw up plenty of rocks, logs and obstacles that would stress any mower and operator. For Barry Taunt of Taunt Contracting at Stratford, down time is less and productivity is up since he opted to put Pöttinger Novacat mower conditioners behind his tractors. With one of the mowers now in its third season Barry says he can't go past the Novacats for productivity and sheer strength.
"We have two now, with the latest being a year old. I have not had to change a thing on the older mower, it has put in some very long hours, and over some rough country too. I have not even had to replace the cutter bar, and there would not be a lot of mowers where you could get away with that." Last season one of the Novacats went for forty hours straight, with no problems. "The only thing we changed was the driver," says Barry. He runs the extensive contracting business with his brother Glen, and parents Lyn and Les. With a quarry and cartage business there is more than enough work to keep the family busy through the season, ironing out the usual peaks in a contractor's year.

Farmer feed back about the mowers' ability has been nothing but positive, and there has been a number of times the machines have worked alongside other brands, with superior results. "One farmer came and told me he could see quite clearly where our machines had been, the paddock was like a billiard table." He believes the fact the Novacats are pivoted in the middle makes for more even weight distribution, delivering a smoother cut and even condition across the swathe.

Barry has also had the opportunity to compare the productivity of the mowers against competing brands, and found he can operate at at least 30% faster ground speed. "Most of the time we can operate comfortably at 12.5km per hour, with no blockages or clumping, while most others are going at 7-8 km per hour. This is despite some of the country around the mountain being rough in places and the worst damage the Novacats suffer is a shorn cutting blade.

"The best thing there though is it is simply a case of unclipping the blade and getting another one on. There are no bolts to undo, it's spring action so down time is minimal and you are on your way again." Barry says the three point linkage hook up has significant advantages over the trailing mowers that are often popular with contractors. "It keeps the mower nice and close to the tractor for transport. You can lift it up and it folds in behind, which is good for narrower gateways and getting around on roads." He usually runs the mowers on a 140 horsepower 6900 John Deere. "It is not so much for the power, but for the stability the tractor provides, there is a decent amount of weight out there, and the bigger machine just sits nicely with it."

This season Barry is looking forward to setting their latest Pöttinger machine up on their new JD 6920S. It is a new Alpha Motion front mounted mower-conditioner and when coupled up with a Novacat on the rear will provide a massive 6m cutting swathe. "This is a very cost effective way for us to really get the most from all our gear. Given the results we have had to date with Pottinger, this should work very well."

Gary Graham (Atarau, New Zealand)

Gary Graham runs two dairy units, milking 1050 cows at Atarau, in the Grey River Valley, West Coast of the South Island, New Zealand.
Gary and his wife, Stacey are very busy people, as they also own and operate an Agricultural Contracting business, specialising in grass harvesting for quality silage production to feed the cows of the West Coast's progressive Dairy Industry.
Gary runs 2 Pöttinger JUMBO 6000L loader wagons, and is considering a purchase of a third JUMBO to cope with the extra workload, mainly from Government owned "Landcorp" farms which have been extensively drained by excavator.

The fields being reformed into "hump and hollow" type conours to assist drainage in difficult soil types and very high rainfall (up to 4.5-5 metres = 195 inches per year)!

Gary Graham

This high rainfall means a very small window of "fine" weather for harvesting, so Gary has also purchased a Pöttinger 8600 Novacat triple mower 'Collector' unit to speed up mowing operations, prior to pickup and transport with the Jumbo wagons. Gary says the loader wagon system is much more efficient and far superior to the alternative self propelled Forager and road trucks, which often get bogged down!!

Gary's Jumbo's are paired with New Holland TM 195 (200hp) tractors equipped with wide tread tyres as are the Jumbo wagons on 700/45-22.5 tyres, which also make them easier to pull over the stack/pit when unloading.

Gary says "The Jumbo wagons ability to give consistent chop length, high quality silage for his customers in extremely difficult (wet) harvesting conditions is very impressive."

The two Jumbos harvested a total of approximately 5500-6000 hectares consistently over th last two seasons, which is a huge amount of crop, and Gary pays much praise to the back up from the service team from his local Pöttinger Dealer, Westland Farmers based in Westport, with a large service workshop also in Dobson/Greymouth area.

Gary's final comment: "Consistent chop length, gives excellent compaction and high quality silage to the customers."

Silage innoculant is used an specified by most clients and silage quality tested out @ 12.2 ME, in a very wet season last year.
On a 12 kilometre job (ie 24 kms turnaround) outperformed a self propelled forager and 4 transport trucks quite easily.

Lars Tolmark (Linköping, Sweden)

Lars Tolmark

Valtra S with Twin Trac Reverse drive and NOVACAT 8600 ED

I have decided on Pöttinger mower combination as it is very nice looking. I was testing the machine the big power (8-10 ha/h is no problem) and the easy operation also on small fields (we have lots from 0,5 to 20 ha) have completely convinced me. The cutting quality is a lot better than on the mower we had before.

I am farming 150 ha grass and 80 ha grain and I am also contracting with the mower combination. We are now building a stable for 230 milking cows all together we have 500 cattle, and we are also building a flat silo, as I had costs of 250.000 SEK (27.200 €) on plastic film I am very interested in Pöttingers silagewagon JUMBO, as it is the most economical way of doing grass silage.

Markus BOLLER (Reitnau, Switzerland)

"I have been working with Pöttinger grassland machines for years. We run an ERNTEBOSS 2H '95, a EUROTOP 380 '01, a CAT 260 Alpin '98 and a brand new EUROHIT 54N. So far all implements have operated to my complete satisfaction. In our area Pöttinger is well in the lead for forage harvesting. There is no alternative if you ask me!"
