Tillage - South
Down Ampney, Gloucestershire, Tuesday 15th September 2009
With the last few weeks being without rain the ground conditions at this year’s Southern Tillage demonstration event were hard going to say the least. Visitors were certainly pleased that they would see all the equipment on the 20 working demonstration plots given a reasonable test in this Gloucestershire brash clay loam soil.
Visitors were able to inspect a selection of Pottinger equipment which included a Servo 45S 5F plough; Terrasem 4000T trailed drill and a Synkro 6003 T working with tractors from Case IH.
The machine that created a great level of interest was the trailed Synkro 6003T which was coupled to a Case IH Magnum 335. This combination was comfortably moving all the soil across its 6mtr working width, down to a depth of 15cm and leaving a well mixed and level seedbed. Thanks to its tine stagger this cultivator leaves a ridge free cut under the moved soil something which is vital in supporting even crop growth and good drainage.
Despite the hard conditions the Terrasem 4000T Profiline drill was able to switch between working direct into the stubble, directly on top of ploughed soil and of course into cultivated stubbles. This was something many of our competitors were unable or unwilling to do throughout the course of the event. We also had the Isobus compatible Case IH tractor connected to the Terrasem displaying its direct control capabilities through the tractor fitted terminal.
For those looking to a more traditional form of cultivation the Servo 45S 5F plough was turning in some perfect furrows across the demo plot. Interest was high in our 46W plough body which allows larger tractor tyres to be accommodated with ease in the furrow and this is something of importance to maintain traction and preserve soil structure.
