Transport technology for sustainable raw materials
Interview with Product Manager about the highlights
| In addition to forage harvesting and tillage, Pöttinger also has a lot to offer in the field of sustainable raw materials. We talked to Manuel Zweimüller - Pöttinger Product Manager for loader wagons - about transport technology for sustainable raw materials: | ![]() |
Which vehicles does Pöttinger offer that are suitable for sustainable raw materials?
Manuel Zweimüller: Pöttinger developed the Jumbo Combiline - which can be implemented as both a silage wagon and a harvest transport wagon - especially to meet the requirements of harvesting and transporting sustainable raw materials. With this solution, maximum versatility and increased machine utilization are guaranteed. Transport speeds of up to 65 kph are also possible, resulting in improved efficiency over longer distances between the field and the yard.
What is special about these transport vehicles?
Manuel Zweimüller: The rugged construction of the Jumbo Combiline features full-length heavy duty pillars placed closely together, a stabilising edge bar around the top (120 x 80 x 4 mm) and a 100% bolted frame (300 x 100 x 50 x 6 mm) for the highest possible stability. The 3-position flap at the front is hydraulically actuated so you can change modes in seconds:
- In loader wagon mode the wide forage compression flap regulates automatic loading.
- In harvester mode the front section is raised with the forage compression flap lowered inside to make full use of loading chamber.
- With the front section folded forwards you can drive in under the harvester auger and still have a good view into the loading chamber.
The new, solid tailgate goes right up to the top where it is hinged on a lever system. These features are the same for both the L and D models. The D version of the wagon is available with a new discharge system: two intermeshing beaters with aggressive tines are supplied as standard - a third beater is also available. The scraper floor has been upgraded for the JUMBO Combiline too: six scraper floor chains are driven by two transmissions on the wagon centreline. Two hydraulic motors with an integrated 2-speed gearbox deliver maximum power (8.9 m/min at 70 l/m and 100 bar), achieving an unloading speed of up to 13.9 m/min.
Straightforward and comfortable operation
A choice of proven Pöttinger control systems is available with the JUMBO Combiline: Power Control and the new ISO Control system (ISOBUS compatible operator terminal) offer automatic function sequences and the highest level of operator friendliness. The loader wagon is ISOBUS-compatible and can therefore be operated using the ISOBUS terminal in the tractor. Combined harvesting and transport wagons can also be controlled conveniently from the tractor driver's seat.
Which chassis technology are the transport vehicles equipped with?
Manuel Zweimüller: Customers can choose from a range of chassis, depending on the model: the reinforced parabolic leaf spring version, the tandem unit or the hydro-pneumatic tandem axle with levelling valve (for easy maintenance). All types of chassis offer the best level of safety at high transport speeds and, depending on the model, are designed for conveying loads of up to 30,000 kg. Experience in the field has demonstrated that this wagon needs to be able to withstand stress levels of this magnitude. Moreover, these types of chassis can be fitted with a steering linkage (centre cone steering) or a trailed axle.
Ground protection made by Pöttinger with 8-wheel chassis
Heavy machines and high wheel pressures continue to make ground compression a compelling issue for the future. Damp areas and locations that cannot support machinery well (e.g. moorland) are extremely sensitive to wheels exerting pressure on the ground. Compacted soil reduces the exchange of gases, inhibiting soil activity as a result. The inevitable reduction in root penetration causes lower yields, a reduction in diversity of plant life and diminishing nutrient reserves. It is therefore critical that the right technology is selected.
An active, feasible measure to avoid soil compaction is to implement equipment with a soil protection chassis, such as the 8-wheel chassis made by Pöttinger. On this chassis - which is unique worldwide - the wheels are mounted on the axles in pairs – each axle is suspended to ensure freedom of movement. The rear pairs of axles are trailed freely to minimise wear to the tyres and protect the sward. A hydraulic level equalisation system with patented pendulum locks ensures best possible pressure distribution. This increases performance on slopes considerably.
The hydraulic suspension system optimises driving comfort; air brakes or hydraulic brakes ensure excellent braking performance even at high transport speeds.
TRIDEM-chassis
Ground protection is also available with three axles. The Pöttinger Tridem chassis distributes heavy loads over a large surface area to minimise pressure transmitted to the ground. Up to 30 tonnes permissible laden weight.
Can you offer different models for maize, grass and short rotation wood - and which sizes are available?
Manuel Zweimüller: All the models in the JUMBO combiline series are suitable for raw materials such as maize, grass and also wood chippings.
The specialist transport wagons in the JUMBO combiline series are available in DIN sizes between 32.3 m3 and 40.8 m3.
