Pöttinger TERRASEM in South Yorkshire (GB)
TERRASEM drill can cope with unpressed ploughed land
Farming in excess of 1,500 acres plus further land under share farming agreements around his base at Malt Kiln Farm, Clayton, South Yorkshire George Moate was looking to replace his 4 mtr power harrow drill unit combination. Top priority was a drill that would significantly up drilling speed and output. With a large acreage of potatoes to harvest during the autumn in addition to drilling, the prospective new drill would have to work efficiently and with out costly delays.
During a visit to Cereals 2006 at Lincoln, George was able to inspect the Pöttinger Terrasem 4000T Profiline trailed drill for the first time. “I was impressed by not only the build quality but the fact that the drill had something many others didn’t, the ability to consolidate the soil before sowing”.
Cereals proved to be the ideal event to be able to make direct comparisons between the Pottinger Terrasem and other key competitors allowing George to reach the decision that the Terrasem would be the drill coming home to Malt Kiln Farm.
Known locally as “Clayton in the Clay” the area around the farm offers some of the toughest clay type soils in South Yorkshire, another challenging feature of soil in this area is its stone content which lies just below the surface. One of the problems of the previous system was that it would bring stones to the surface creating further problems. Having looked at tine type system drills George concluded that only a disc type drill would cope with these difficult conditions. “The Terrasem just rolls over them leaving them in place which reduces dramatically any problems we used to experience with these large stones. Something that has been quite amazing is that we haven’t suffered a blockage all season and I can only put this down to the large diameter cultivating discs plus the good under frame clearance, the drill has coped with everything we have had to incorporate” |

Terrasem operator Brian Chappel has found that he can achieve forward speeds of 12-14kmh allowing outputs of between 88 and 105 acres in a 10 hour day. Brian says “The Pottinger joystick controller and ISOBUS control makes operating the drill easy and fast, all the drill functions are at my fingertips”
Growing wheat for a premium milling contract means no mistakes can be made in establishing the crop. George comments “I’ve found the germination this year to be far more even. This of course allows the applications of fertiliser and herbicides to be absolutely maximised ensuring I achieve the best possible yield and quality from my wheat”
With regards to after sales service George comments “The support from Pottinger has been exceptional. I believe we have received the best possible back up we could of expected, so much so we have not lost one single day to a breakdown or failure”.
In conclusion George has this to say “The Terrasem has enabled us to speed up our drilling process, reduce establishment costs and ensure the crop has the best possible start by placing the seed at an even depth across its working width”.
So with its first season at Malt Kiln Farm completed the Pottinger Terrasem has proved itself as the right decision, looking likely to see many more successful sowing years in South Yorkshire.
